Homelessness is a pressing issue in Chicago, and has been for a great number of years. It is an estimated 80,000 individuals, including children, who are experiencing homelessness in Chicago. There are thousands of adults and children facing the daily struggle of survival without stable housing, lack of food and proper nutrition, as well as mental health counseling. Factors such as high poverty rates, economic instability, lack of housing programs, low domestic violence help, high rental prices, low paying employers are also causes of homelessness in Chicago. There are thousands of poverty stricken individuals who struggle to afford a place to call home, purchase food to eat, and basic necessities such as clothes, personal hygiene items, and shoes. More causes of homelessness are inherited poverty, limited education, and unemployment. Health problems can cause homelessness and homelessness can cause health problems.
